When You Stand at the Back of the Room
Standing at the back of the room always gives you a different perspective—just as standing at the front does. But this weekend, as I stood in both places, it was the back that impacted me most.
This weekend I hosted a ladies’ retreat for 29 women and 19 children—missionary women, female GAP staff, and ministry leaders. Women who hold visions and dreams to impact the nations. Women who stand in the gap for the vulnerable and the oppressed. Women who lead their families with grace and compassion. Women who could use some relaxation, respite, and refocusing on how God leads us to “Pleasant Places” (the theme of the retreat).
My dear friend Sandy flew into Thailand with a team of eight amazing women who led a relaxing, engaging, and impactful day and a half. Many said it was so encouraging—exactly what they needed, or didn’t even realize they needed.
I’m so grateful. I have carried women’s ministry in my heart for many years. People have encouraged that gift in my life since I was a very young woman (21 years old!). I’ve been blessed to be part of many wonderful women’s gatherings, but this one was significant and special to me in a different way.
I got to host it. I helped dream it up.
When we act out of obedience and follow the gentle nudges of the Holy Spirit, many others are blessed as a result.
So this weekend, as I stood at the back of the room with women in front of me worshipping the Lord, tears fell from my eyes as I looked around. I was reminded of God’s faithfulness. I was reminded of His calling on my life. And I felt so blessed to be part of what God wants to do as we walk in obedience.
Would it be helpful for you to take a step back and see what God is actually doing in your life, your ministry, your family, or your workplace?
Sometimes it’s the step back that allows us to see what has been accomplished, where God is moving, and what we are a part of.
My encouragement to you this week is simple: take a step back and have a look.
“Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
you make my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance.”
Psalm 16:5,6 NIV
